Four main reasons:
- Oversize core diameters (tapping drill diameter) produce truncated threads resulting in insufficient thread engagement with the male component.
- Undersize cores produce torn threads and an oversize effective diameter, occasionally to the extent where they will not fit the male component at all.
- Undersize cores encourage tap breakage.
- Significantly undersize cores prevent the tap starting so cannot be tapped.
